Then and Now Part 4: Open Graph

Radar Hill has been in business for 16 years, and the magnitude of change in the 21st century when it comes to websites is staggering. What was a shiny new website just 5 years ago can now be outdated and leave your business with a huge potential gap in visitors and clients. There are various measurable ways that the World Wide Web has changed in 16 years, and we are publishing a “Then and Now” blog series to illustrate what a website in 2017 requires to stay current. This edition: Open Graph

Then:
Before the Internet, newspapers, magazines, and television was the way to mass communicate with people, and not everyone could participate equally. If you had the budget you could advertise your business, but most people just consumed the content, never really actively participating. Maybe if there was a particularly amusing ad or interesting article they would cut it out to show to a couple of their friends, but there was nothing as extensive as today where you can share anything with literally hundreds of people in just a few seconds. With print, it was easy to see how exactly something would be displayed; once it was printed, that was it, as the image or article wouldn’t change.

Now:
Social Media is ubiquitous. It is everywhere, no matter how much you might try to avoid it – and most people do not try to avoid it. Even if you personally never post or share anything on a platform, either your business does, or you consume information that comes via social media. The vast majority of people have Facebook in some capacity, and it is not just for baby pictures and complaining about little annoyances. Real business happens on Facebook every day. It has become a vibrant hub for just about anything, which is why if you want to succeed on Facebook, you need to be displaying your content in an aesthetic manner that will not only get noticed, but clicked on, and result in a real purchase.

Then:
The World Wide Web (WWW) and its Hyper Text Transfer Protocol (HTTP), one of the languages used to communicate across the Internet, triggered a new way of sharing information. A generation ago, information was not sent via electronic wireless venues, rather everything was written down on paper. If there were secure files stored in a safe for example, you would know immediately if there was a breach, as you would be able to see any damage done. And even once the Internet became prominent, what was available for hackers to access was very limited. There were no banking records, personal identities or other personal data that were stored in cyberspace that could be accessed from anywhere at anytime.

Now:
The Internet has evolved immensely in its 24 years of public use. Everything is done online. And what you need to remain secure is constantly changing. Hackers are eager to always tear down defences and exploit weaknesses, to get your information. There has been an increase in cybercrime in the last few years, with the emergence of robot networks that enable criminal activity to be conducted on an unprecedented global scale. Anyone can be targeted, and it just takes one little slip and hackers can intercept all kinds of information. However, there is something that can help combat the risks of the Internet, and that is SSL.

Then and Now Part 2: Schema

Radar Hill has been in business for 16 years, and the magnitude of change in the 21st century when it comes to websites is staggering. What was a shiny new website just 5 years ago can now be outdated and leave your business with a huge potential gap in visitors and clients. There are various measurable ways that the World Wide Web has changed in 16 years, and so we are publishing a “Then and Now” blog series to demonstrably show what a website in 2017 requires to remain current. In this edition, we bring you: Schema.

Then
Not too long ago if you had a business then it was probably listed in the yellow pages, be it a small square or full page full-colour ad. And if you had the budget, you could advertise in newspapers/radio/tv/billboards. It was about name recognition, and reviews for the product or service you offered came from word of mouth. There was no global searchable database for anything that you wanted or could think of.

Now
With the emergence of the Internet, businesses can control their brand via their online presence, and instead of referrals or finding the nicest ad in the phone book, people look directly for the service or product they desire on Google and other search engines. Google has dramatically evolved its search engine ranking position algorithm since its inception in 1998. In the beginning, it used to be simply about putting important keywords higher on the HTML tag hierarchy, but that was rife for deceit. Over the years Google has changed its algorithm significantly as several major updates have taken place, which means websites needing to adapt in order to be ranked highly. Schema is among those additions to help give a user a smoother experience.
