Stay-cation 2015

Stay-cationThis summer our family decided on a ‘stay-cation’. Luckily we live in Victoria and there are a zillion things to do. Each of us added to a list of things we wanted to do.

Note to those of you that left our beautiful city or decided not to visit you didn’t miss too much – just everything! Here’s an incomplete list:

Lookout Lake, Colwood: might just be the weirdest place you will find a lake.

Lone Tree Hill, Langford: an easy trail up to a decent view.

Sooke Pot Holes, Sooke: our thing is to park at the bottom and walk/swim the river right up to the campsite.

Witty’s Lagoon, Metchosin: if you hit it right the tide is out for long, long way. A great beach on the West side.

Island View Beach, Central Saanich: a great beach on the East side.

Pink Bicycle, Victoria: very good food – try the deep fried Mars bar.

Barb’s Fish and Chips, James Bay: great fish and chips.

The Fish Store, James Bay: oh man! The selection is incomparable and fresh.

Matheson Lake: ok, you’re probably picking up on a lot of dog walking and hiking by now. Very quiet and beautiful location.

Snowbirds: we watched from Beacon Hill Park – we were there!

DSW: on opening day for some serious shoe shopping! (Perhaps not a tourist attraction but it was our the list.)

Thetis Lake: great pathways to enjoy and little Thetis allows for dogs to get wet.

Beaver Lake:  this park area also includes Elk Lake. I had no idea how big it is. Dogs and horses (on a lot of the trails) are permitted.

Victoria Harbour Ferry: so much fun! I really enjoyed listening to the questions “real” tourists asked the boat captain.

Science World, Vancouver:  this turned into a wonderful surprise. Wish we had scheduled more time for this attraction.

Peaceful Restaurant, Vancouver: from an episode of Dinners, Drive-Ins and Dives. Very yummy.

IKEA – when on the mainland! When are they coming back to the Island?

Ross Bay Cemetery Tour – the kids were bored silly but Tracy and I enjoyed the history.

Beacon Drive-In:  mmmm…ice cream.

Royal Roads University: lots of trails and beautiful scenery.

Eagle Wing Tours:  seeing whales is guaranteed. Ask about the time whales closed the inner harbour airport.

Dragon Boats: checked out the festival. So much enthusiasm from the participants!
