A few years ago, a company by the name of “Domain Registry of Canada” sent out hundreds of letters to domain owners in hopes of scamming them out of money. Now they’ve come back, looking to get money from you by telling you your domain needs to be renewed or you’ll lose it. This is a scam!
Previously this company would mail letters to the address located on the domain registration, which for our clients is the Radar Hill address. This would allow us to ignore the scam and not worry our clients. However, this year they’ve started to mail letters to people based on the address on the domain’s website.
If you receive any contact from the Domain Registry of Canada requesting that you send them money for your domain renewal, ignore it! The Better Business Bureau (BBB) has released the following information about Domain Registry of Canada:
Based on information the BBB has obtained, consumers are receiving renewal forms from Domain Registry of Canada to renew their domain names. The issues with the renewal forms however, is that they are not renewals at all. In fact, by filling in the form and sending it in, the consumer has actually agreed to the transferring of their domain name from their current registrar to the Domain Registry of Canada. The BBB would like to remind consumers to carefully read all correspondence before filling in and submitting any forms.
For more information about the scam as it ran in 2012, you can also take a look at this helpful article. If you do happen to get a letter from this fraudulent organization, keep it and send a copy to the Canadian Internet Registration Authority (CIRA) so they can take action against them.
This isn’t the first company to try and scam people out of money this way. Many scammers try to take advantage of people when it comes to domain registrations and renewals via email and letters.
